Osaka food tours and cooking classes compared
Kushikatsu in Shinsekai, takoyaki on Dotonbori, izakaya in the back lanes of Ura-Namba. Here are the guided tours and classes you can book, with what the ticket covers and what you still pay at the counter.
Guided food tours in Osaka
Osaka calls itself the city of kuidaore, eating until you drop, and its tours are built on that idea: many small dishes at several counters in one evening. The table lists what each tour includes and what it leaves to you. The most-reviewed tour comes first, and a tap on any column header changes the order.

Cooking classes in Osaka
Osaka’s own dishes are the batter ones, takoyaki and okonomiyaki, and they are the reason to cook here rather than in Tokyo. Ramen and sushi classes run in Osaka as well, and the sushi class has the broadest diet options on this site.

What the ticket covers and what you pay on the night
Osaka tour listings count dishes generously and say less about the rest. This is what the listings themselves state about extras.
- The long Shinsekai tours by Hungry Osaka Tours, Osaka Food Tours, Inc. and Goen Japan include their dishes and a set number of drinks. They name no further costs.
- The Dotonbori tour with 12 dishes covers its set menu; anything beyond it is paid in cash on the spot.
- The kushikatsu and okonomiyaki tour through Shinsekai and Dotonbori includes two drinks, but the short train ride between the districts is yours to pay.
- The takoyaki tour includes the tastings and no drinks.
- The small-group tour in Tenma includes up to three drinks; more cost extra, and a wagyu upgrade is offered.
- On the bar crawls nothing to eat or drink is included. The bars take cash only.
- The XLSWORLD classes in Bakuromachi include sake or beer with the meal you cook.
So carry yen in small notes on any tour. On the crawls it is the only way to pay.
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal
Osaka street food is built on wheat batter, dashi and seafood, so most tours cannot adapt much. The matrix shows what each listing says. Not stated means the listing is silent, so ask the operator before you book.

Two details the matrix cannot show: the vegetarian kushikatsu on the Shinsekai and Dotonbori tour are cooked with a pork-based dashi, and the takoyaki tour in Dotonbori is not suitable for anyone with a food allergy.
Four districts, four kinds of evening
Most Osaka tours stay in one or two neighbourhoods. Which one suits you matters more than the dish count.
Shinsekai
The retro quarter around Tsutenkaku tower. Deep-fried kushikatsu skewers are its signature, and the busiest tours meet at Dobutsuen-mae or Ebisucho station.
Tours: Hungry Osaka Tours, Osaka Food Tours, Goen Japan, plus the kushikatsu and okonomiyaki tour that continues to Dotonbori.
Dotonbori and Namba
The canal with the Glico sign and the giant shop signs. Takoyaki stands sit side by side here, which is why the takoyaki tasting tour works in six shops within two hours.
Tours: the 12-dish tour, the takoyaki tour and the evening tour from Ebisubashi.
Ura-Namba and Tenma
Ura-Namba means the back of Namba: narrow lanes of standing bars and izakaya a few streets from the canal. Tenma and Kyobashi lie away from the main visitor routes.
Tours: the Ura-Namba bar crawl and the small-group tour through Tenma and Kyobashi.
Kuromon Market
A market street known for seafood. It is a daytime stop: many stalls close in the early evening, so market tours start in the morning or around midday.
Tour: the Kuromon Market walking tour with six tastings.
- Be on time. One operator gives no refund for late arrival, the evening tour from Ebisubashi waits only five minutes, and the ramen studio near Osaka Castle starts five minutes after the set time without latecomers.
- Some meeting points are hard to find: the sake and takoyaki class sits on a second floor in a side lane, the Bakuromachi classes are in a residential building (ring room 303), and the Namba pub crawl meets at the side entrance of the Apple store, not the main door.
- Several listings mention hotel pickup, although the tours start at a fixed meeting point. Plan to get there yourself.
- Restaurants on the routes change with the season. The dish lists on the booking pages are examples.
- Small groups can run with only you. Guests on several tours and classes report being the only participants; the tour went ahead, just without a group.
Coming from Tokyo, going on to Hiroshima
If you start your trip in the capital, the sister site on food tours and cooking classes in Tokyo covers the yakitori alleys of Shinjuku and the sushi counters around Tsukiji, a different menu from Osaka’s batter and skewers.
Heading west afterwards, you will meet okonomiyaki again in Hiroshima, layered there instead of mixed, and the guide to Hiroshima and Miyajima day trips lists the tours that start from Osaka.
Why this comparison exists
The big Osaka food marketplaces list only their own tours, and most blog lists do not say what you pay on top. We put the bookable tours and classes side by side and copy what each listing states about dishes, drinks, extras, groups and diets. Where the listing says nothing, the table says not stated. If you book through a link here, the booking platform pays us a commission; your price stays the same.
Eating your way through Osaka, the common questions
Which district is best for a food tour in Osaka?
It depends on what you want to eat. Shinsekai, around Tsutenkaku tower, is the home of kushikatsu and the base of most of the long-running tours. Dotonbori and Namba are where takoyaki stands and neon signs crowd the canal. Ura-Namba, the back lanes behind Namba, and Tenma further north are izakaya districts that the bar crawls and the small-group tour use. Kuromon Market is a daytime place, because many stalls close in the early evening.
Do I need cash on an Osaka food tour?
Bring some. On the full food tours the dishes and drinks listed are covered by the ticket, but anything extra, such as further drinks, is paid on the spot, and one tour states that extras are paid in cash. On the bar crawls cash is essential: food and drinks are not included at all, the bars do not take cards, and on one crawl the bill is split evenly between the guests.
Is there a food tour in Osaka for vegetarians or vegans?
Among the tours, options are thin. The biggest Shinsekai tours rule out vegans, and one of them vegetarians too. Goen Japan can accommodate vegetarians to a limited degree, and the kushikatsu tour that offers vegetarian skewers uses a dashi made with pork. Cooking classes are easier: the sushi class in Shinsaibashi has vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and halal menus if you tell the operator three days ahead, and the ramen studio near Osaka Castle makes vegetarian and vegan versions on request.
Can I join with gluten intolerance?
On the street food tours, not really. Takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu are all made with wheat batter, and the large Shinsekai tours say they are not suitable for a gluten-free diet. The sushi class offers a gluten-free menu, and there is a ramen and gyoza class in Higashiosaka built entirely around gluten-free noodles and wrappers.
How old do you have to be?
The bar crawls are for guests aged 20 and over, the legal drinking age in Japan. Hungry Osaka Tours takes children from 10, the small-group tour through Tenma and Kyobashi from 13. Most other listings give no minimum age, so check the booking page before you book for a family.
When should I book?
For cherry blossom season, which in Osaka usually falls between late March and early April, and for Golden Week (29 April to 5 May 2027), book as early as you can. The small groups of 6 to 8 fill first, and some of the cooking classes already show a sell-out warning. Tours go ahead in the rain; the Namba pub crawl says so on its listing.
Food tour or cooking class?
A tour shows you a district and lets you taste more dishes in one evening. A class teaches you one or two dishes properly and is easier to adapt for special diets. Takoyaki work both ways: there is a takoyaki tasting tour in Dotonbori, and there are classes where you make them yourself, one of them paired with a sake tasting.
Pick a district, then a tour
Shinsekai for kushikatsu, Dotonbori for takoyaki, the back lanes for izakaya.
